CAPRICORN
Giacinto Scelsi: 8 Songs of Capricorn for singer playing a gong
Karlheinz Stockhausen: Capricorn for bass and 8 or 2 track tape
I had the good fortune of meeting Giacinto Scelsi when he auditioned me to sing the world premiere of his piece "Yamaon" (this was to be the first concert of his music after his death on 8.8.88). Although my time with him was limited to only a few meetings, I was deeply touched by the man and his music and he is one of the composers I perform the most. It so happens that 8 of the Songs of Capricorn work well with the bass voice. Karlheinz Stockhausen is my musical and spiritual father. We have worked together for 18 years. He adapted the winter section of his masterpiece "Sirius" for me and the result is "Capricorn". This program unites two contrasting visions of the constellation which is Capricorn.
EAST MEETS WEST
Pieces by Western composers influenced by Asia and Asian composers who write Western contemporary music
JOHN CAGE
Aria
Song Books (excerpts)
4'33"
A Flower
The Wonderful Widow of 18 Springs
Nowth upon Nacht
Although I never worked with Cage and took a long time to appreciate and understand his work, this is the tribute which results from years of searching. I try to capture the tenderness, beauty and, above all, humor of this composer who always had a smile on his face.
JOHN CAGE | SCELSI
8 Songs of Capricorn for voice and gong by Giacinto Scelsi
Ryoanji for tape, rin and voice by John Cage
This is a "Japanese" program. The sign of Capricorn (Scelsi's sign) joined the East and the West on globes which represented the signs of the zodiac. Scelsi wrote his piece for the Japanese virtuoso singer Michiko Hirayama. Cage's piece is a musical rendition of the famous Zen garden in Kyoto. It is no coincidence that the standing ovation which Cage led for Scelsi at the World Music Days helped people to understand what a great composer he is.
MAURICIO KAGEL: DER TRIBUN, PHONOPHONIE
RECITAL
Luciano Berio: Sequenza III
Giacinto Scelsi: Wo Ma
György Kurtág: Hölderlin Gesänge
Sylvano Bussotti: L'Infinito

This recital is a "best of" concert which brings together some of my favorite pieces for solo voice.

André Malraux understood how the West is tempted and tempting. European and North American composers have long been influenced by Asian music and some of the most important "contemporary music" composers of the younger generations are Asian. Musically, the results are surprisingly similar. In addition to singing the world premiere of Robert HP Platz's bunraku inspired piece and follow up performances in Paris, Berlin, Cologne, Toyama and Düsseldorf and my extensive work on the music of Scelsi and Cage, I had the priviledge of singing the title role in Toshio Hosokawa's "Vision of Lear" at the Munich Biennale and have composed two pieces inspired by Asian music myself.
